Balance is a very general word that can take on so many different connotations. What is the first thing that comes to mind when I say, “you must find balance in your life.” You think about the mental balance of work, family, friends and self, right? That is correct and valid. However, physically, we must also find balance. The body’s balance declines as we get older-fact! Our proprioception is our brain’s ability to locate where we are in space. So, if you were to get up right now and stand in the center of your room (where there is nothing but you and an open room), you would find it challenging to remain balanced if you stood on a single leg and closed your eyes. Try it. First on the right leg, and then on the left. If someone is around, have them time how long you can remain on a single leg. The amount of time you can stand on a single leg with your eyes closed is a great indication for how well your brain’s capacity is for balance. So, whether you’re good at it or not, you still must work at it. Start today.
There are many devices out there that help you work on balance. My idea for posting on balance came from my visit to the Relax the Back store in Santa Monica where the employees are so nice there. They answer any and all questions you have about gadgets that help relax your back. Aside from this awesome store, there are gadgets that you can use in your exercise program to help you improve balance and proprioception. These gadgets should be used throughout your week every week to not only to shake up your lymphatic system, but to also challenge your ability to change direction, and move functionally, thereby reducing your risk for falls and breaks. Here is a list:
Kangoo Jumps (tell my man Raj Donald that you read JZ’s blog-he’ll take great care of ya!)
There are more. You should always hire a trainer for proper execution of each…My favorite modality of balance training is simply exercising on a single leg with everything you do. For example, do your bicep curls on a single leg. Close your eyes and focus on slow movements up and down while maintaining a neutral spine, bracing your abs and keeping your shoulders and gaze relaxed. Practice makes better. Other ways of enhancing balance is by brushing your teeth on a single leg each day. Another wonderful idea (no need to feel like you look weird either-who cares if you do!!!)is standing in line at the grocery store in tree pose (as depicted in the photo.) Work on your balance and you will find yourself more balanced in your life! xo JZ
I thank Dana K. for filming me at Relax the Back yesterday!Do you think I look silly? Survey says….
